Thomson Learning
  About Course Technology (Thomson Learning)
  • Course Technology is a leading publisher of text-based and electronic learning solutions.
  • Their solutions include dynamic books in all technology-related disciplines, as well as complete instructional resource materials and powerful technology-based assessment and learning solutions that surpass their customer's needs and expectations.
Problem Definition

  • In June 2002, Course Technology gave the go ahead to Compro for creating a new architecture for delivering performance based training and assessment products.
  • The basic requirements were to create high performance simulations that closely match the live application in looks as well as to allow the students to explore the application and perform complex (multi-step multi-path) activities.
  • Key objective of the new architecture was to minimize development cost and speed time to market.
  • The software should be conveniently extensible, thereby protecting the development investment.
  Solutions Offered

  • The new architecture was the outcome of Compro’s collaboration with Course Technology. The architecture provides a platform for efficient development of robust simulations for training and assessment.
  • It is an XML driven generic framework using a library of intelligent, reusable components and a logic interpreter. This allows for efficient creation and reuse of learning elements.
  • A learning content management system was developed to allow rapid development of new learning experiences. This is used by developers to convert the content that the authors provide into robust simulations for the learner.
  • Architecture supports future extensions for full web delivery, SCORM compliance and WYSIWYG task creation.
Results

  • The first product earned great reviews from the market regarding the richness of the simulations.
  • Following the success Course Technology has launched multiple products in to the market. Additionally, a large volume of content has been transformed quickly and effectively into robust simulations over the last one year.
